The Seven Core Elements of Interior Design

The Seven Core Elements of Interior Design

Interior design is an art form which allows the designer to share and express their creativity in a manner that reflects the personality and values of the client. The design of homes is effected by the long-spanning influence of urbanization. The trend of migration from rural areas to urban centers continues. As megacities continue their expansion and swelling, home design is faced with the challenge of accommodating more people in less space. The task of the interior designer is to invite peace and tranquility into the home. They are able to accomplish this task through a keen sense of style, balance between symmetry and asymmetry, and the harmonization of their own design ideas with the needs of the homeowner.

The first element is space. Space planning is the foundation of all design ideas. This process involves enlivening the available space, accounting for neglected areas, and utilizing design elements. For example, to make a smaller space appear larger through vertical lines and minimalism.

The second element is line. It allows the implementation of a theme in the living space. Simple horizontal and vertical lines can be added to produce a theme of minimalism and simplicity. Otherwise, lines can align to complementary design elements or can create an asymmetrical balance for contrast. Lines can be outlandish or they can be orderly.

The third element is forms. As a general rule, form is always to follow function. That is, the form should further the aesthetic value of the design trend. Natural forms can be utilized to prevent the appearance of negative space. Geometrical forms can also be utilized in contemporary or modern space planning.

The fourth element is light. Light should always be the focal point. It is the basic element that creates the mood for the room. Windows or skylights may introduce abundant natural light, or diverse forms of accent lighting can give way to a unique, modern look. Brighter lighting is to be established in areas where inhabitants spend most of their time, such as the kitchen, dining room, and living room. Focused lighting can be used to illuminate a dinner table. Dimmer lights tend to be preferred in areas where relaxation is sought after, such as bedrooms and bathrooms. The lighting should maintain a complementary balance with the other design elements.

The fifth element is color. The color scheme is a primary factor that affects the aesthetics and mood of the home. Different colors have different effects on our mental outlook. Some people love to be surrounded by bright, vibrant colors. Others will find it overwhelming. Therefore, the best compromise is to combine vibrant and dull colors to create a balance.

The sixth element is textures. Texture is not limited to a visual element. It is the subtlety of the actual textures in the space which reflect the unique personality of the space.

The seventh element is pattern. It is a very important factor. Patterns can be designed into any form. Radial patterns, straight lines, and geometric shapes add depth to the design. Patterns can also be implemented in the materials. They usher in connectivity throughout the space.
